If well-nigh artists in contemporary electronica ar wish islands unto themselves, turning prohibited tracks in congener namelessness, Pete "Namlook" Kuhlmann is a whole continent. A dizzyingly fertile composer who's steadily reinforced up an entire diligence around his Frankfurt-based Fax label, Namlook's name is inextricably linked with the post-rave revitalization of ambient music, and many of his solo and collaborative recordings with the likes of Mixmaster Morris, Tetsu Inoue, Klaus Schulze, Bill Laswell, Richie Hawtin, Geir Jenssen, Dr. Atmo, Burhan Ocal, Atom Heart, Jonah Sharp, Charles Uzzell-Edwards, and David Moufang, among many others, number among the to the highest degree lauded and influential in new ambient. Although Namlook got his start cathartic quasi-new age (as Romantic Warrior) and hard trance (as Sequential, 4Voice, Escape, Deltraxx, and a host of others), he and his mark have become synonymous with new ambient since Fax began exclusively cathartic the style shortly after the label formed in 1992. Fax helped give supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe to ambient's new schooling by allowing the artists to freely experiment piece making a living from their medicine. (Fax's label structure confers the majority of its lucre to its artists.) Countless Fax releases, particularly those dating from 1993 and 1994, ar considered classics of contemporaneous electronic ambient, and while the label has suffered a sure grade of repetition in recent old age, Fax remains one of the to the highest degree of import and influential German electronic music labels. Namlook has been criticized for adopting a quality-over-quantity approach shot -- his label's discharge schedule was up to a CD per calendar week for more than a year, and currently produces 24 per class, many of them Namlook's have -- merely he's succeeded in attracting a devoted, sharp-set following that allows him and his label to continue releasing raw medicine. Fax has released more than than 250 full-length CDs, scores of 12-inches, and several compilations -- including the sprawling 4-CD Ambient Cookbook, which cadaver the c. H. Best founding to the label -- and has expanded to included quaternity Fax-related labels and deuce subordinate labels (Instead Interesting and Headphone, play by Atom Heart and Higher Intelligence Agency's Bobby Bird, respectively). Fax releases hold been accredited for reissue by R&S, Music Man, Rising High, Instinct and Injection. With distributors on trey continents and a little universe of Web sites devoted to reviewing, trading, and collecting Fax titles, the label and its owner sustain long since passed the stage of phenomenon and crossed o'er to institution.
Musically, Namlook draws most recognizably on the synthscapes of artists such as Klaus Schulze and Hans Jochim Roedelius, comb the drone electronics of those artists with, depending on the project or partner, ethnical instrumentation (tabla, tambouri, oud), environmental samples (rainwater, voices, arriving and departing trains, wildlife), sweeping electronic treatments (the bubbly undercurrents of Dreamfish or the drifting synthetic landscapes of 2350 Broadway), and minimal acoustic and electronic rhythms (jungle, electro, techno, and trance). His collaborations tend to surpass his solo recordings, although a few of his solo deeds ar among Fax's finest. Though hard to bump, the 2 volumes of The Definitive Ambient Collection offer a good founding to Namlook's early work. Subsequent compilations of more recent material have appeared at middling regular intervals; due to the extensive diversity of styles chased by various projects, compilations may be the best blank space to bulge.

While he was drumming with Nirvana, Dave Grohl was recording original songs at home that never received public release. Those tapes would become the foot of Foo Fighters, the stripe he formed in 1995, after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like Nirvana, Foo Fighters melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and interracial punk sensibilities with a sharp sense of pop songwriting.
Dave Grohl began playing guitar and writing songs in his early teens, as well as playacting with a diversity of hard-core kindling bands. In the late '80s, when he was still in his teens, he linked the Washington, D.C.-area hard-core band Scream as their drummer. During the last days of Scream, Grohl began recording his have substantial in the basement studio of his friend Barrett Jones. Some of Grohl's songs appeared on Scream's last album, Fumble. After Scream's 1990 summer duty tour, Grohl linked Nirvana and stirred to Seattle.
After Nirvana recorded Nevermind, Grohl went back to the D.C. area and recorded a handful of tracks that would appear on Pocketwatch, a cassette released by Simple Machines. For most of 1992 he was busy with Nirvana, simply when the band stayed off of the road, he recorded solo material with Jones, world Health Organization had stirred to Seattle. The pair unbroken recording passim early 1993, when Grohl returned to Nirvana to criminal record In Utero. Grohl had toyed with the idea of cathartic another self-governing cassette in the summer of 1993, but the plans never reached fruition. Following Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, the drummer unbroken subdued for several months. In the strike of 1994, booking prison term in a professional studio, Grohl and Jones recorded the album that became Foo Fighters' debut album in a week. Boiling down his backlog of songs to about 15 tracks, Grohl played all of the instruments on the album. He made one C copies of the magnetic tape, departure it out to friends and associates. In no time, Grohl's solo project became the object of a fierce track record company bidding warfare.
Alternatively of embarking on a fully fledged solo career, Grohl decided to configuration a stria. Through his married woman he met Nate Mendel, the bassist for Sunny Day Real Estate. Shortly before the pair met, Jeremy Enigk, the leader of Sunny Day Real Estate, had born-again to Christianity and chuck up the sponge the band, efficaciously ending the group's life history. Not only did Mendel connect Grohl's band, just so did Sunny Day's drummer, William Goldsmith; former Germs and Nirvana guitar player Pat Smear rounded out the lineup. The band, named Foo Fighters afterward a World War II secret force that allegedly researched UFOs, signed a condense with Capitol Records. The band's self-titled debut, consisting solely of Dave Grohl's solo recordings, was released on July 4, 1995. It was an inst achiever in America, as "This Is a Call" garnered wakeless alternate and album rock airplay. By early 1996, the album was certified pt in the U.S.
End-to-end 1996, Foo Fighters supported the album with an extensive tour, enjoying a crosswalk off with "Big Me" that give. Late in the year, the group began recording their moment album with producer Gil Norton. During the sessions, William Goldsmith left the band due to creative tensions, going Grohl to drum on the majority of the album. Before the record's release in the spring of 1997, Goldsmith was replaced by Taylor Hawkins, wHO had previously drummed with Alanis Morissette. The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters' second album and the beginning they recorded as a band, was issued in May of 1997. Smear left the group in the wake of the album's completion, and was replaced by guitar player Franz Stahl, whose remain proved short-lived; 1999's At that place Is Nothing Left to Lose was recorded as a three-piece, with ex-No Use for a Name guitar player Chris Shiflett signing on soon afterwards. One by One, the group's most dressed production, appeared in late 2002, followed by 2005's In Your Honor, which narrowly lost the upper side of Billboard's record album chart. After releasing a live album highborn Skin and Bones in 2006, the band returned to Norton's studio and started constructing a twelve fractured and eclectic rock songs to be released in 2007 under the refer Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace.
